RHYS HOLLIS, ANDREA BAKER, DIVINE TASINDA, KHEANNA WALKER: OMOS

The makers of the film OMOS describe it as follows:

OMOS is a moving image and performance project that pays homage to the history of Black people featuring in performances in the 16th century royal court, and celebrates Black performance today.

Four Black performers return to a Castle to pay homage to this history and reclaim the story through drag, dance, opera and pole dance in a Shakespeare-inspired forest and the castle. OMOS uses queer cabaret techniques to draw on the past and look to the future.”

In August 2024, Critical Gallery brings Scottish film and media art to Turku, exhibiting two works with a focus on black culture / POC culture, gender diversity, experiences of sexual minorities – and experiences and status of people who deviate from the white heteronormative standard.

Rhys Hollis & working group’s (Andrea Baker, Divine Tasinda, Kheanna Walker) film titled OMOS (2022) will be screened at Critical Gallery. The location of Adam Castle & David Bugarin’s interactive video work Sore Throat / Magang Lalamunan (2023) is a pop-up-space at the Wiklund Centre.

Both works are produced by the queer cultural centre POLLYANNA (https://pollyanna.org.uk/) who describe their practice as follows:

“Across cabaret, film and arts projects, we aim to celebrate LGBTQ+ performers, support artists in testing out new ideas, and create spaces that welcome communities to forge connections and be inspired to be creative.”
